Reasons For Multimedia In Room 101

I worked in room 101 and we used different forms of multimedia, we used:
A projection of eye surgery
The noise of a baby crying
Lamp (lighting)
Sodium Lights (lighting)

I think that the projection of eye surgery was very effective to use in the performance for room 101 because it is such a disturbing video and graphic image to see, being human as we are we immediately imagine ourselves and our reactions if we were under those circumstances and in doing this cause ourselves the feeling of disgust. Another reason as to why I found this effective is because due to the emotion of being disturbed it trigger a reflex that us as humans are unable to control like a cold chill or a shudder, the feeling could also cause goose bumps. Being in room 101 this is the intended affect on the audience and having this effect means that we are successful in portraying room 101 as a disturbing place and we ourselves as performers are making correct decisions.

I think the noise of the baby crying throughout was effective because our brains are observant and attentive of the noise and our primal instinct is to help, having this in room 101 knowing that you couldn't help this 'child' and to make matters worse Kitty (a torturer) would bang on the cupboard from where the noise was coming out and do the opposite of helping.

Having the sodium light was very helpful and effective because it bright to a blinding extent and being in this light (which is where some audience members were pushed) meant you could hardly see anything else which would hopefully give them the feeling of vulnerability. Also this light gave off a lot of heat which meant when walking into the room there was a feeling of suffocation and a sense of claustraphobia which once agin in room 101 is the intended effect.
